Scarlett Johansson has been recognized and honoured by Forbes as the top-grossing actor for 2016. Her movies have earned US$ 1.2 billion (AU$1.7 billion) in global ticket sales.

According to Forbes, it was her big role in the movie “Captain America” which earned $1.15 billion (AU$1.59 billion) a piece landing her at the top of this year’s list. She played the character Black Widow. Aside from that, she also starred in the Coen brothers' "Hail, Caesar!" which amounted in US$63 million (AU$87 million) worldwide.

Business Insider reported that Dwayne Johnson would’ve made it to the list this year if animated films had been factored in, since he is part of the new animated movie “Moana." Also, Johansson's numbers would have been higher this year if her voice roles in “Sing” and “The Jungle Book” were counted.

The next potential blockbuster for Johansson might be the movie “Ghost in the Shell.” The said movie was adapted from a Japanese film franchise. The director of the upcoming film is Rupert Sanders who expressed that Johansson is the best actress of her generation, ETOnline reports. "I think whenever you cast someone, someone's going to be critical of it. To me, I stand by my decision.”

Johansson will also be part of the upcoming movie “Rock That Body,” the Lucia Aniello comedy.
