With Ndamukong Suh set to hit free agency soon, the Oakland Raiders are positioning themselves for a chance at the star defensive player considered one of the best in the National Football League, or NFL. The Raiders franchise is set to host Suh in the next few days and will try to convince the star free agent to sign with them and leave his previous team, the Detroit Lions.

Michael Silver, writer for the league’s official website, updated the news on Twitter on Wednesday night.

The Lions had a chance to extend Suh’s stint with the team for the upcoming 2015 NFL Season but chose not to use the franchise tag on him and sign him on a long-term contract. The risk now is that the Lions may lose Suh in free agency as he hits the open market by March 10, 2015 if they can’t agree on a deal.

Suh is looking at a long-term deal that will pay him around $15 million to $16 million per year similar to the contracts of star defensive players like J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans and Gerald McCoy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Suh was drafted second overall in the 2010 NFL Draft and has since played for the Lions. He was named to five NFL Pro Bowls 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and also to the NFL First Team All Pro four times in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

The Raiders are just one of the many NFL teams which are looking to steal Suh from the Lions in this offseason. Other teams which are mentioned to be trying to get Suh are the Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, all of which have some salary cap space to accommodate Suh’s huge contract.
