An egg shaped 4.5 billion year old meteorite crashed directly on the roof of a French Family. Coincidentally, the house is owned by the Comette family which is on a vacation when it happened. They were not aware that a meteorite crashed until their roof started leaking.

"We got the roof tiler round and he was astounded," said Martine Comette, "He said: 'You need to be Superman to break a tile like that! It must be a meteorite.'"

It is not a common occurrence in Paris to have meteorites crashing on roofs. In fact, this is just among the 60 known cases of landing meteorites in France in the past four hundred years.

"It's incredibly rare. We have never found any less than 80km (50 miles) from Paris before," says Alain Carion, a mineral scientist and meteor hunter.

Carion investigated the meteor and found out where it came from.

“With an age of around 4.57 billion years, the 3oz egg-sized object came from an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter” he said.

“The iron-rich celestial rock known as a "chondrite" was easily identifiable thanks to a "black fusion crust that characterizes the crossing of the Earth's atmosphere".

Same thing happened in 2009, when a 14 year old boy from Germany was hit by a meteorite directly on his hand. "At first I just saw a large ball of light, and then I suddenly felt a pain in my hand.

Then a split second after that there was an enormous bang like a crash of thunder." says Gerrit Blank. He was able to survive the pea sized meteorite that landed on his hand. However, the incident caused him to have a 3 inch scar. Blank was among those people who were able to survive direct meteorite landings.

A woman in Alabama also survived when a meteorite crashed on her roof in 1954. She was among the lucky survivors who were able to survive a grapefruit sized meteor after it bounced off a furniture and directly landed on her when she was sleeping.

Though it’s rare to encounter meteorites, it is not always favorable to have one crashed on your home. Different cases of people died by a crashing meteorite have been reported in different news papers

The Commettes are indeed lucky to have a meteorite landing on their home without anyone getting hurt.

"A météorite landing in your garden is magical and more unlikely than winning the Lottery," says Mrs. Commette in an interview.
