Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground died on Sunday, Oct. 27. The rock musician, who is based in New York, died at a hospital in Southampton, New York. He was 71. His friends and fellow artists pay tribute to the death of one of Hollywood's most influential rock musician.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald through a telephone interview, Reed’s literary agent, Andrew Wylie, explained that his demise results from complications from a liver transplant that the rock icon had received at the Cleveland Clinic in May 2013.

The SMH described Reed as “one of rock’s most influential stars.”

1. He has written hit songs including “Walk on the Wild Side,” “Heroin,” “Sweet Jane” and “Perfect Day.”
2. He had Andy Warhol as his producer when he was beginning to find his way in the music industry.
3. He is considered one original New York hipster, said news.com.au
4. He practiced tai chi
5. He is one very few music artists able to combine music and fine arts as seen in the covers of his album. This includes the image of banana in their album that led them to some massive legal battle between the 1960s and 1970s.

The loss for one of the industry's highly respected artists has been largely felt as tributes flood in social media. Fellow artists and more celebrities took to social media to pay tribute to Lou Reed.

David Bowie (Facebook): "R.I.P. LOU REED. It is with great sadness that we report the death of Lou Reed who died today aged 71. (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013). David Bowie said of his old friend: 'He was a master.'"

Steve Tyler (Twitter): "RIP TO A GREAT FRIEND A FELLOW MUSICIAN. FROM MAXES TO THE MASSES YOU MADE THE WORLD SING. I LOVE YOU LOU!"

Nikki Sixx, bassist of Motley Crue posted: "Thank you for your beautiful/dark lyrics/music and stance on life. You inspired me from my teenage years right up till today."

Billy Idol (Twitter): "U were my inspiration in the '70's, 4 without you there would have been no punk rock".
