"American Idol" 2014 (Season 13) Top 8 performed live Wednesday night on FOX. Two of the "frontrunners," Jessica Meuse and Alex Preston, dished impressive original songs. Malaya Watson was somewhere in the middle. Sam Woolf and CJ Harris, both in the bottom three a week ago, showed some improvement.

American Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr. enjoyed the Top 8 performance night. Season 13 has been blasted for its weak live shows, but the Top 8 night was promising. Among the best were the songwriters' numbers, so Jessica Meuse and Alex Preston should be safe.

Both "Blue Eyed Lie" by Jessica and "Fairy Tales" by Alex are expected to chart on iTunes. Sam Woolf's take on Ed Sheeran's "Lego House" could also chart. Woolf's vocals are radio-ready. However, his performances throughout American Idol Season 13 have been a tad too dry or too cold.

Malaya Watson and Jena Irene Asciutto both did well in their numbers. Considering their AI Top 8 performances, however, Jena is miles away in proving her Idol potential. Jena's guts and relevant artistry shone when she put her own soul/pop brand to Adelle's "Rolling in the Deep." [Watch Jena Irene on American Idol's YouTube page.]

Caleb Johnson, who always brought his A-game, is likely to skip the bottom three again. American Idol 2014 has never seen Caleb, Jessica and Alex in the bottom three.

Between Dexter Roberts and CJ Harris, the latter is by far the weaker performer -- all of American Idol 2014 weeks considered. Their duet was mediocre, and it did sound like Harris was the problem. The AI judges obviously love him, but the voters are likely to send Harris back to the bottom three.

American Idol 2014 Top 8 night (production calls them the Super Eight) showed less mess ups than the average four to six in the past couple of weeks. Critics are only holding out on the praise just so it would not be jinxed.

That said, the three American Idol Season 13 contestants who are likely to fall in the bottom three this week are: CJ Harris, Malaya Watson, and Sam Woolf.

American Idol 2014 Top 8 Results Night: Who goes home - or gets saved?

Who goes home this week? Will the AI judges finally use their save? Connick could be the hardest to please among this year's panel. Urban looked frustrated when MK Nobilette was not saved. JLo hinted she fought for Majesty last week.

UPDATE: The bottom three on the Top 8 week are indeed CJ Harris, Malaya Watson and Sam Woolf. The judges have finally used their one and only save. Sam Woolf stays after being in the bottom three a third time. Next week is American Idol 2014 Top 8 Part 2.
