Gosling was asked by Refn, who never made a Hollywood film, to star in Drive. Refn addressed his meet and greet with Gosling as a "blind date," which "led to us basically having a mental fuck in a moving car and creating Drive".

The role of Ryan in Drive attempts to rescue Carey Mulligan, who plays a young mother. Drive has an unusual approach in terms of violence.

Ryan and Nicolas, they found their inspiration in making the movie by simply driving around LA and watching movies of John Hughes and Walter Hill. Drive has eccentric mix of tones, moving from robbery sequel going to a romance plot.
