After being released by the Detroit Lions, veteran running back Reggie Bush will be going to the San Francisco 49ers returning to the state where he was a star in college. The 49ers are in search of options at the starting running back position after losing veteran RB Frank Gore to free agency and the Indianapolis Colts in this offseason of the National Football League, or NFL.

Adam Schefter, NFL Insider for ESPN, reported the deal on Twitter.

Bush attended La Mesa Helix high school in California and the University of Southern California in college. He was the second overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints where he played in his first five seasons in the NFL from 2006 to 2010. Bush played briefly for the Miami Dolphins for two years in 2011 and 2012 seasons before landing in Detroit in 2013.

Being drafted very high in the rookie selection, Bush never met the kind of expectations tagged to him as a pro. His stint with the Saints were troubled with injuries and only played in one full season, his rookie year, with New Orleans. On limited role and production, Bush helped the Saints to the Super Bowl XLIV title in 2010. Bush signed a four-year deal with the Lions in 2013 and produced good numbers in his first year with the squad.

In the 2013 season, Bush registered 1,006 rushing yards on 223 carries with four touchdowns. This was only the second time he hit 1,000-plus rushing yards with the first one happening with the Dolphins where he had 1,086 rushing yards on 216 carries with 6 touchdowns in 2011. The 30 year old Bush, who is known for his versatility in the backfield, is expected to battle for a starting RB spot in San Francisco’s tweaked roster under new head coach Jim Tomsula.
