Despite being the starter for the the team for most of his career and a big contract with the squad, Jay Cutler isn’t pegged to be the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears for the 2015 season of the National Football League, or NFL. Both new head coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace are saying that Cutler needs to prove himself in training camp if he wants to have the starting job under centre for the next season.

In latest reports, the Bears brass has stated that they need to evaluate the roster first, particularly their quarterbacks which includes Cutler before making a decision on the starting QB job.

"We're not up against a deadline. My experience has always been that you need to gather the information, and in turn, you usually make better decisions. We're in that process, and we'll keep you posted,” Fox said to ESPN.com on Wednesday. “I think just getting to know him [is important]. You know, everybody's got perceptions. But I think that getting to know the guy, this is a relationship business, and that takes time. So I don't want to stand up here and give you a final evaluation when I'm maybe a quarter through the test."

Pace agreed with his head coach and said they need to know better their quarterback first before making a decision. Pace admitted that Cutler went through a tough season but described Cutler as a player with “outstanding physical talent.”

This early in the offseason, Cutler will be battling for the starting QB spot against veteran Josh McCown, who was recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McCown played under Fox with the Carolina Panthers in 2008-2009. Fox’s most recent coaching stint, from 2011 to 2014, was with the Denver Broncos, a team led by star quarterback Peyton Manning.

Cutler finished with 3,812 passing yards on 370 of 561 completions or 66.0% passing percentage, with 28 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in the 2014 NFL Season. Cutler’s Bears missed the postseason going just 5-11 in the regular season.
