Even though the official Windows 10 release date is a bit far away in summer, a new report states that Microsoft is apparently working on a major update to the upcoming operating system. And reportedly, the software update is named after Minecraft video game as "Redstone.” Moreover, the expected roll out date of this particular update is sometime in 2016.

According to ZDNet, the Windows 10, with codename "Threshold," will reportedly receive minor updates sometime in fall, in addition to receiving small regular fixes and security updates from Microsoft. However, the next major update dubbed "Redstone" will not be called "Windows 11" or "Windows 12." Instead, the tech giant will reportedly maintain the same name "Windows 10." And the expected Windows 10 Redstone release date is believed to be summer or fall 2016.

Furthermore, ZDNet says, the “Redstone will be delivered automatically to Windows 10 users as part of their regular, every-month-or-so updates.” “Redstone will just be a larger update than the others and will provide new functionality and support for new classes of devices that aren't already part of Windows 10, so the supposed thinking goes,” the site opines further.

So how is Windows 10 different from Redstone? Apparently, the frequent updates to Windows 10 will include browser updates for Spartan, messaging and even the Start Menu, which are not considered as part of the Windows core features. In the meantime, the Windows core changes will apparently include bigger updates focusing on the main features like Xbox Surface Hub, Windows Phone and HoloLens, which is the upcoming holographic augmented reality headset from Microsoft. Plus, Redstone will also reportedly come with some Windows core features that did not make it to the release time frame of the Windows 10 OS.

On the other hand, Microsoft apparently opted for the name “Threshold” for the Windows 10 based on video games. In the same way, “Redstone” is seemingly a reference to a virtual ore in the game "Minecraft." And apparently, the credible Windows tech site Neowin also has confirmed that, Redstone is the upcoming software update to Windows 10 for 2016. In any case, readers should note that, Microsoft has not confirmed the Windows 10 Redstone yet.
