Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s uncle, former International Boxing Federation, or IBF, super featherweight champion Jeff Mayweather, talked about the potential super fight between his nephew and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in a recent interview. Jeff also revealed his thoughts on why the boxing world continues to crave a fight that has long been laid on the discussions table and still hasn’t reached a done deal after nearly six years.

According to Jeff, Manny and his promoter Bob Arum are not really trying to take advantage of the situation to such an extent so that they would gain a hefty financial reward from Floyd. However, Jeff believes that Manny should have accepted the fight five years ago when he was at the peak of his boxing career rather than push for a fight now.

Pacquiao has lost twice, including his knockout defeat from Juan Manuel Marquez, since 2009. Jeff can’t quite fathom why fans continue to cheer for Pacquiao to become the first fighter to give Floyd a professional loss.

“Floyd hasn’t lost, he’s been beating younger fighters, up and coming fighters, all these guys that are some of the top guys in the weight class,” Jeff told On The Ropes Boxing. “Manny Pacquiao has lost and he’s been knocked out cold, but everybody is still speaking like he really has a chance with Floyd, when the reality is, he really doesn’t have a chance.”

Jeff could only think of one reason why there is still an excitement towards the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. He believes that the way Floyd brags about his wealth and the way he spends his money on luxurious things such as expensive cars, private jets, jewellery and other exaggerated material goods makes people feel vexed and annoyed.

“That’s the bottom line because you don’t have a reason to hate a guy just because he’s winning,” Jeff said. “You hate him because he fronts the fact that he has money.”

The fans continue to wonder what is really holding up the mega-buck Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. People anticipated than an announcement will be made during Super Bowl XLIX, but it seems that both camps have failed to meet a common ground and agree on a deal yet.

Arum has criticised the lack of urgency from Mayweather’s camp. The undefeated fighter, who is currently vacationing in Jamaica, recently denied that the Pacquiao fight is already a done deal in an Instagram post.

Fans were left disappointed that Floyd and Manny are still negotiating. Arum told ESPN that they are running out of time for the proposed May 2 fight. ESPN analyst Dan Rafael said that Floyd and Manny have already agreed on other issues such as 60-40 purse split in favour of Floyd and drug testing protocol.

However, there are still some points that present a major hurdle from making the fight happen. Rafael said that rival networks HBO and Showtime/CBS are still trying to work out the broadcasting and rerun rights if the fight takes place. Rafael further stated that Showtime wants a similar deal when the TV networks resolve their differences to deliver the Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis fight in 2002.
