Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd is busy with his new second solo project, Sons of The Sea, while his band takes a long break from their last world tour promoting 2011's If Not Now, When album.

He told Billboard in March that he has been "tinkering around, potentially, with a second solo record". A few weeks later, news came out that Boyd is working with producer Brendan O'Brien for a new project titled Sons of The Sea.

O'Brien is a veteran rock producer who has worked with Pearl Jam, The Killers and Soundgarden. Aside from Incubus' 2011 album, he also produced their two other albums, A Crow Left Of The Murder (2004) and Light Grenades (2006).

Finally in June, fans were treated with a sample from the frontman's four-song Compass EP.

Boyd handled the lyrics and vocals for his new project while O'Brien contributed for the guitar, piano and bass parts.

In an interview with Noisey in July, he said that "Being in a band is, in a really good way, more of a committee. So everybody has very much of a democracy.

“Sons of The Sea is just Brendan and I, so it’s like, ‘Do you like this?’ ‘Naah.’ ‘No, I don’t like that either.’ So it just goes faster. With that sort of rigidity, as a songwriter I can better sort of, channel what’s going on in my creative space right now … Brendan is very much a virtuoso on all the instruments on this album, but it’s really just the difference between a committee of two and a committee of five.”

He has just released the full tracklisting for the Sons of The Sea album. It will have its full-length debut on Sept 24.

Aside from his latest solo music project, Boyd is also busy finishing his third art book. His bandmates are also committed with their personal projects.

"I know that Chris Kilmore has been doing a lot of DJ gigs and has been making a name for himself doing so. Mike Einziger just scored an independent film that's coming out this week I think. Ben Kenney is making another solo record on the east coast. Everyone is keeping busy," he said.
