Australia is the most popular country on Instagram. The country's national page is the most followed in the world with the most popular images, ranging from kangaroos to scenic landscapes. The images posted on Australia's Instagram account are believed to have helped in boosting tourism.

With more than one million followers on Instagram, Australia's national page is managed by a small team of social media experts who feature iconic images showcasing the country's national treasures like koalas, kangaroos and the great outback, according to the Daily Mail. Many of the images have gained more than 50,000 likes from followers.

The team running Australia's Instagram page sift through thousands of photos being posted on the account on a daily basis. Some of the users even include the hashtag #seeAustralia, so the team can view the images.

John O'Sullivan, Tourism Australia managing director, told the Daily Mail that the wide following of Australia's national page is "incredibly valuable" as social media has increasingly become a cost-effective and significant part of a destination's marketing strategy. He believes that followers of the page have the "genuine desire" to share positive experiences of Australia and help promote the country as a holiday destination.

According to a recent survey on the Instagram account, 91 percent of the page's followers said posting images on the site could help promote travel to Australia, while 87 percent answered that it would motivate them to visit the country often. One follower from London who also answered the survey remarked that he uses Australia's Instagram page to showcase what the country has to offer to his friends in England.

One American fan remarked that he wants to go to Australia now that he has joined Instagram that has more than 300 million monthly users around the world. Australia's national page has attracted an overwhelming number of followers on Instagram, besting UK's 131,000 followers and New Zealand's 30,000 followers.

Aside from social media, Tourism Australia has been aggressively promoting the country as a holiday destination in China with massive billboards of lobsters, sparkling brut and oysters from Australia facing Shanghai subway stations and malls. Business Spectator reported that the number of Chinese tourists visiting Australia have increased in the last few years as Tourism Australia considers China as the largest market.
