Australians are being urged to affirm their commitment to being a citizen on Citizenship Day 2013 on Sept 17.

On the occasion, nearly 2300 people from 92 countries prepare to become Australian citizens as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations around the country tomorrow. In a press release issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), said the event is a fantastic occasion for Australians to welcome new citizens.

The statement also said, it is an occasion for the country to reflect on the values of citizenship, and what it means to 'be an Australian'.

"Australia's newest citizens come from diverse backgrounds, with a range of experiences and journeys to their new lives in Australia," the spokesman said in the statement.

"What they all have in common is a commitment to this country and its people, which will be commemorated in ceremonies nationwide," the statement said. To coincide with Australian Citizenship Day, the department has also launched a social media campaign, encouraging Australians to post a video on social media site Instagram explaining how they affirm their loyalty to Australia.

"We're asking Aussies to create their own affirmation, starting with the words 'As an Australian citizen, I affirm ...' and then explain a way they demonstrate what it means to be an Australian," the spokesman said.

Australians have been asked to post a video on to www.instagram.com/diacaustralia# and use the hashtag #AusCitzDay, which is the official campaign hashtag.

The best entries will be shared across the department's Facebook, Twitter and Storify accounts, the release said.

Being an Australian means a lot at least when it comes to generosity. Australians gave $2.21 billion in the 2010-11 financial year which is an increase of 12.63% over the previous year. A recent, World Giving Index ranked Australia the world's most generous country with Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. following.
