Unregistered Dentist Ran Clinic From His Garage In Melbourne; Was Reportedly Trained In Turkey

The Victorian Department of Health and Human services alleged a man for practicing dentistry without a licence for over a decade in the suburbs of Melbourne.

The organisation that is committed towards good health and wellbeing of the Victorians found out that Muhammet Velipasaoglu had been operating out of his garage in his residential property on Rocklands Rise.

He was allegedly trained in Turkey but had been operating in Melbourne without registration since 2003; Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has charged the fake dentist of running an illegal business. Victorian Minister for Health Jill Hennessy said Velipasaoglu ran his home clinic in "a clinically unsafe environment, using clinically unsafe equipment".

"It's my advice that this practice was at this person's house and certainly there was activity occurring in the garage," she added.

AHPRA chief Martin Fletcher said the investigation done in the premises made them concerned about issue related to infection control as well as possible health risks. More importantly, as Mr. Fletcher said, this man was never registered to practice as a dentist in Australia.

Meanwhile, the Victorian Department of Human Services has issued a public interest warning for those who may have been patients of the alleged unregistered dentist. They must call the department on 1800 356 061 to seek advice from trained health staff.

"We are concerned that patients who received dental care from this individual at this premises may have contracted a blood borne infection as a result of poor infection control practices," the state's acting health chief Dr. Finn Romanes said in a statement.
