Passers-by Deny They Saw 2-Year-Old Chinese Girl Run Over by Van, One Admits Shame for Failure to Help
The perceived apathy of majority of passers-by who were caught on surveillance video on Oct. 13 ignoring a two-year-old Chinese girl hit by a van continues. Although some of them were caught on film staring at the girl, one claimed he did not see Yueyue.
"(I swear to the God) if I had seen the girl, I would die in your face," the Shanghai Daily News quoted a shopkeeper who was seen stepping out of his plumbing shop, looking at the child and then leaving.
He admits being berated by customers who recognised him on the CCTV footage.
A motorcycle rider claimed it was too dark to see anything, but admitted he heard a crying sound, although he thought it came from a nearby shop. The motorcyclist alibi was repeated by most of the passers-by caught on the footage, except for one woman who admitted seeing Yueyue bloodied.
The woman, who was with her daughter, explained she was frightened at the sight of blood on the road. She added that she thought the child fell while playing and was unaware that Yueyue was run over by two vehicles.
The woman who helped Yueyue, however, was a stark contrast to the apathetic residents of Foshan. Identified as 57-year-old Chen Xianmei who is a trash collector and part-time cook from Qingyuan, she continued to show her care for Yueyue by donating to the child's medical expenses part of the 25,000 yuan ($3,800) reward the Nanhai District Civilisation Office gave her on Monday for her heroism.
"When I see old people who fall down, I help the.... Somebody has to help. The most important thing is to save a life. She was just a little child. It was dark, but I could definitely see her," Yangcheng Evening News quoted Chen.
Ou, the mother of Yueyue, said she does not have enough words to thank Chen, whose kindness shone above the indifferences of most Chinese.
"I bear no grudge and refuse to be disappointed by society," the mother said.
Yueyue remains in critical condition at a Ghangzou hospital. Some reports said she is progressing, while the Shanghai Daily News reports that her brain stem reflexes were absent and her pupils no longer react to light. Previous reports said she is in coma.
Hu, the driver of the first van that ran over Yueyue twice, surrendered to police on Sunday afternoon. The driver of the second van, Jiang, was arrested at 9 p.m. on the night of the accident.
