In 2014, an unassuming game was released only to capture the hearts of mobile gamers around the world, and now, its sequel, “Monument Valley 2,” has been released for Android devices. The title has been out on iOS for months.

Pre-registration opened for Android back in August. Those who registered, however, didn’t get the game early; they were merely set to receive updates once it was set to arrive.

Developer Ustwo’s sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed mobile games, “Monument Valley 2” retains the mind-blogging level designs. The Escher-inspired set pieces, it should be noted, is what made the original a darling among gamers when it first released.

The new game tells the story of Ro, whose job is to guide her child through the valley. Those new to the series need not play the original, although both titles have the same tap-to-walk controls and the ability to manipulate the surreal environment. Both games also boast a relaxing soundtrack that may as well tell its own story.

“Monument Valley 2” has been available in China since launch, according to a report by The Verge, in which Ustwo studio head Dan Gray admits, “Day by day, we make more money in China now than we do in the US.” It’s no surprise that the game is doing well in the Chinese market, since the developers have partnered with industry giant Tencent for its release, even adding social features and optional localisation.

As for a possible third game? Gray wants everyone to stop expecting. “We still get people going ‘Where’s Monument Valley 3?’” he is quoted as saying. “It’s like, ‘No, stop! We need to give you something you don’t know you want yet.’”

“Monument Valley 2” is currently available for Android and iOS. The game costs US$4.99 (AU$6.50) to download.
