The secret behind the royal wedding gown that changed the course of the fashion world is now revealed, and designer Sarah Burton shares how she was able to keep the project a secret.

When Kate Middleton walked down the aisle April 29 in that long-sleeved, lace gown, fashion critics were quick to note that it was the Alexander McQueen design director Sarah Burton who was responsible for the job.

The gown had a corset-type bodice with an intricate sleeve lace work that went down to Middleton's wrists. The dress surprised many critics, saying that the elegant choice instantly made the future queen a style phenomenon.

But the mystifying thing is how Sarah Burton was able to keep the project a secret all along. According to a report, Burton signed a confidentiality agreement with the palace to keep the commissioned dress a secret.

Burton had the perfect excuse for being away on Alexander McQueen-related events. Burton was able to miss meetings without anyone speculating because of the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art Alexander McQueen exhibit scheduled after the royal wedding. Burton also said that her "core group," who worked on the dress, knew about the secret and it gave her an ace to be in and out of meetings.

"I remember other people asking me, "Are you coming in on Friday?" And I'd say, "Oh, yeah, see you in the morning." I'd be scheduling meetings knowing full well I wasn't going to be there for them" told Burton to Vogue Magazine. When the designer was invited to the royal wedding, she was overcome by how beautiful Middleton looked in her creation.

"I remember standing in Westminster Abbey thinking, 'This is unreal'. It was like a fairy tale. And all I could think was, 'I hope I don't trip over'. I didn't realise the enormity of it until much nearer the wedding day. It was a magical experience," added Burton in the a report.
