Themed as "China: Through the Looking Glass," this year's Met Gala saw celebrities dressed in dragon-embroidered couture matched with fiery headdresses. But what really made headlines that night were the extremely revealing gowns of many female celebrities, ranging from Miley Cyrus' daring cutout dress to Beyonce's sheer gown that barely covered her privates.

And while these stars mostly ditched their underwear because it would have ruined their overall looks, some people have gone commando because of the perceived health benefits of doing so. Of course, there are also many misconceptions with regard to not wearing underwear, such as the belief that it indicates promiscuity and that it is bad for your sexual health.

But for both men and women, going boxer- or panty-less is really comfortable, as it gives an airy feeling down there, as opposed to the somewhat constricting feeling of skimpy undies. It is for this very reason that many underwear brands are trying to create undergarments that feel as if there is nothing there, such as Naked Brand Group Inc., a company that is founded on one basic desire: to create a new standard for how products worn close to the skin fit, feel and function.

Naked Brand has spent years developing men's underwear designs and fabrics that feel like you are wearing nothing at all, thanks to its products' streamlined styling, hidden waistbands, intelligent edging, and breathable fiber. Though Naked Brand is currently catering only to the male clientele, the company is planning to bring its first women's collections to the market, consisting of intimate apparel, sleepwear, and loungewear during the first half of 2015.

Aside from comfort, going commando is also said to prevent infections, as gynecologists recommend skipping the panties when there is lots of itching and irritation down there. The nether regions are already moist and hairy, so adding a layer of suffocation in the form of underwear can make things worse.

Furthermore, Dr. Gillian Dean from Planned Parenthood New Your City said in an interview that there is no scientific research suggesting a direct correlation between going commando and contracting infections. Alyssa Dweck, another gynecologist and author of the book "V is for Vagina," said, "Nothing wrong with going commando at any time." It is actually recommended to sleep in the nude, as it allows the vagina to air out at night as part of practicing good vaginal health.

However, it is important to remember that the decision to chuck your undies depends on the situation. "Many women will have a normal vaginal discharge day-to-day that varies with their cycle," Dweck said. "That's just something to keep in mind to avoid embarrassing moments." It is not just a matter of whether or not you feel like baring it all, but also a matter of checking if your current surrounding environment allows it. No wardrobe malfunctions were reported during the Met Gala though, so perhaps those celebrities got a free pass.
