A Solar Flare Bursts Off The Left Limb Of The Sun In This Image Captured By NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory

An image of the sun, taken last October 8, with a Jack-O-Lantern grin was released by NASA. The image was produced by the Scientific Visualization Studio at NASA.

According to the Washington Post, the stunning image is a combination of pictures of the sun, taking two wavelengths into consideration, 171 and 193 angstrom that are gold and yellow coloured, respectively. The results of the combination make the sun appear like the face of a Jack-O-Lantern.

NASA reported that the instruments were used to observe the lights that are otherwise not visible to the naked eye. It was said that the light of 171 angstroms shows the atmosphere of the sun as well as the giant magnetic arcs called coronal loops, when it is quiet while light of 193 angstroms showed the hotter region of the corona as well as the hot material from a solar flare.

NASA explained that the active regions that emit more light and energy are the bright spots that are observed in the image. It continued that the active regions mark the set of magnetic fields that are around the sun's atmosphere and intense and complex in nature.

According to the Daily Mail, storms and flares are observed on the surface of the sun. The article by Mark Prigg explained that solar flares could cause potential damage to satellites.

Mark Prigg explained that the astronauts were not in immediate danger of it, but have to take the exposure of the sun into consideration during their space walks. He added that in danger, it could pose to the satellites, the charged particles also could disturb the magnetic field of the Earth, in turn, threatening aeroplanes as well.

A video was posted by the YouTube channel, The Cosmo News, with the title "Jack-O'-Lantern: NASA Reveals Images of Sun In The Halloween Mood" last October 13. In a day, it has managed to garner about 1,000 views and 13 comments. Here is a look at a few of the comments.

T Kerr: It's funny. I think we are connected with the sun and the moon! If we are happy, the sun is happy. If we are angry and in fear and stir up trouble, so does our sun!! If I am happy and content so is our sun!! Meditation and direction is key!!! We are so powerful. And our governments keeps a swift hold on this!! Holidays. It is so all connected!!

Paul singh-sangha: I don't know. It kind of looks like a smiley face if you ask me. - LOLOL !
