Obesity has often been blamed for poor health of people, including higher chances of acquiring chronic ailments such as diabetes, hypertension and other illness that result in astronomical medical bills.

However, in some cases, having a lot of body fat could turn out to be a blessing in disguise as what happened to a 33-year-old Chinese man identified only by his surname Yang.

Global Times reported that Mr Yang fell on Sept 29 from the 17th floor apartment window in Wuhan. Thanks to his body fats spread in his 90-kilogramme body, while he suffered bone fractures as he hits two air conditioner units on his fall, he was released on Friday, Oct 25, with only minor injuries in what could have been a fatal plummet.

Due to the aircon rack on the 6th floor that blocked his fall, he actually fell only 11 floors.

Ai Fen, director of emergency care at the Wuhan Central Hospital in Hubei Province, said that emergency workers initially thought that Mr Yang would have severe inner injuries because of the 11-floor fall.

Mr Yang, who said he was helping clean his friend's aircon compressor when he suddenly lost balance, said he felt aches all over his body when he woke up in the hospital.

Mr Ai attributed the soft landing to Mr Yang's body fat and flesh cushioning the fall and preventing any serious damage to the man's internal organs.

Accidents will always happen, such as this girl who also fell from a window, but was caught by passing delivery men.
