Rick Castle and Kate Beckett's professional relationship came to an end in the mid-season finale of "Castle" Season 7. Castle paid the price for being friends with mob-boss Dino Scarpella. At the end of the episode, Beckett was unaware that Captain Gates has given Castle the pink slip and that her husband will no longer be working with her to investigate murder cases. The preview of the new episode suggests that Castle will not be sulking for a long time, as he pops up donning the private investigator hat. He will be returning as "Richard Castle, Private Investigator."

The preview clip indicates that it will be husband versus wife, as Beckett can be seen saying in the preview clip, "there is no way that he can solve this case before us." The preview says that "the competition is on." There is going to be a leap of a couple of months in episode 11.

In an interview with TV Guide, David Amann, showrunner of "Castle," revealed some details about the upcoming episode. He said, "Castle's not at the precinct, but he's writing and keeping busy, and Beckett and everybody's kind of acclimated to his absence."

Castle, however, does not let them get too used to his absence. He pops up after getting his private investigator license, becoming the real private eye. He has only one intention that is to get into "the 12th Precinct through the back door," according to Amann. He is not going to succeed in that but "that is not going to stop him from trying."

Amann said that the upcoming episodes are going to be fun. Castle is going to be a "novice" as a private investigator. He is not going to be good at it in the beginning, as he has not investigated like a private investigator before, Amann said. The showrunner said that it is not going to be a permanent arrangement. Also, Castle will find a way to work with Beckett

"Castle" Season 7 returns, with new episodes, on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015. The episode 11 is titled "Castle, P.I."
