Salim Mehajer, the millionaire property developer and deputy Mayor of Auburn, infamous for his extravagant ways, has once again raised eyebrows and invited controversy owing to his big, fat, over-the-top wedding ceremony on Saturday. The motorcade that included luxury cars, motorbikes, a jet and four helicopters angered his neighbours and the common people who were caught up in a traffic jam due to road blockades.

People living on Frances Street, Lidcombe, were allegedly sent letters dropped in their letter box, asking them to remove their cars from the street or risk them being towed if they came in the way of the convoy. When asked about it, Mehajer said it was “nonsense” and that no such letters were sent to his neighbours.

The ceremony was put on hold for sometime as Mehajer waited for his father to be released from jail and attend his wedding. His father, Mohammed Mehajer, had been accused of a AU$3 million fraud offence that involved the National Australia Bank, according to Fairfax reports.

Mehajer however feels he has not done anything wrong. “That was the aim — the aim was to make it the best and biggest wedding ever,” he said in a radio interview this morning. “I don’t think we did anything wrong”.

Irene Simms, a fellow councillor, told News Corp that Mehajer will have to face the council in a meeting this week where he is expected to face questions over his unauthorised conduct. Mehajer told KIIS FM in an interview that he had secured permission from the council but had no control over the extra number of vehicles that joined the procession resulting in a road blockade. Simms, on the contrary, said that Mehajer was only given permission for partial road closure.

“A lot of people are very unhappy about the letter that was boxed to local residents, which is the biggest concern,” Simms said. “People are very unhappy for being held up by traffic. The people that live near the park [are unhappy] because they think they should have been told it would be landing.”

She also said that the residents had launched a petition to sack Mehajer as the deputy mayor of Auburn.
