Mining billionaire Clive Palmer will make a donation to a young program in Australian philanthropic history.

In a media briefing on Thursday, Mr. Palmer said he will shell out $6 million for ten years to the Duke Edinburgh Awards Program. The Clive Palmer Youth Development Initiative seeks to support young people in regional and remote areas by providing them with leadership skills programs.

Halo, one of the West Australian Aboriginal youth development groups, is said to be one of the beneficiaries of Palmer's donations. The group is one of the participants of the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Marlon Johns, an Aboriginal youth worker, said Mr. Palmer's donation was “out of this world.”

"The world would not be the same if we didn't have people like him in it so thank you so much for your generous donation," the 19-year-old worker said.

The group Halo provide hope and aspirations of young Aboriginal men. Several of its members had spent time in detention and suffered from violence, drugs, and alcohol.

Mr. Johns narrated his story on his tough situation and suffering while living under the roof of his abusing father. He also mentioned how his father booted him and his mother and three siblings out of their home.

"Growing up wasn't easy for myself and three siblings. We saw a lot of violence, my mum being hit around and a lot of drugs being used,” he said.

Mr. Palmer said he is aware of his responsibility to give back to the society, particularly in the West Australian community, which helped him succeed in his career.

Mining projects shelved

Meanwhile, Mr. Palmer's company-owned Mineralogy will halt one of its planned projects in Balmoral South iron ore projects in the Pilbara region due to the government's decision on mining tax.

He said the board of directors were in agreement on the halting of the projects.

The proposed resource super profits tax will enforce miners to pay 40 per cent tax. The resource tax is part of the package to ease the impact of compulsory increase to employer superannuation contributions.
