Amazon Rolls Out Alexa+ AI Assistant to All U.S. Users, Free for Prime Members Nearly a Year After Debut

Amazon.com Inc. on Feb. 4, 2026, made its generative AI-powered Alexa+ assistant available to every customer in the United States, expanding access to the upgraded voice assistant nearly a year after its initial early access launch in February 2025.
The rollout includes free unlimited use for Amazon Prime members — a perk bundled into the $139 annual or $14.99 monthly membership — while non-Prime users can subscribe for $19.99 per month or try a limited free chat version via Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app. The move broadens what began as a waitlist-only preview to tens of millions more users, positioning Alexa+ as a direct competitor to advanced assistants like Apple's upcoming Siri enhancements and Google's Gemini integrations.
Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa and Echo, announced the expansion in a blog post and interviews, noting that tens of millions of customers already used Alexa+ during early access. "We're excited to announce Alexa+ is available to all customers in the U.S.," Rausch wrote on About Amazon. Prime members gain "unlimited access" across compatible devices, the web, and app without extra fees.
To activate, Prime subscribers can say "Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+" on an Echo device or log into their Amazon account on Alexa.com. Non-Prime users access a restricted free tier for basic chat interactions or pay the $19.99 monthly fee for full capabilities. The service remains English-only in the U.S., with device language set to "English United States."
Alexa+ represents a significant overhaul from the original Alexa, introduced in 2014. Powered by Amazon's Nova large language models and Anthropic's technology, it supports more natural, multi-turn conversations, remembers context over days, and acts as an "agent" to complete complex tasks. Users can plan trips, book reservations, order food, coordinate family calendars, or manage smart-home routines with greater personalization and proactivity.
During early access, customers streamed music while discussing artists and genres in depth, asked detailed questions, and engaged in ongoing dialogues. Interaction rates more than doubled compared to classic Alexa, Amazon reported. The assistant integrates deeply with Amazon services — including Prime Video, Music, and shopping — and supports third-party skills, Ring cameras, and smart-home devices.
The timing places Amazon ahead of rivals in rolling out a widely accessible, AI-enhanced voice assistant. Apple has teased major Siri upgrades with Apple Intelligence for spring 2026, while Google continues expanding Gemini across Android and Nest devices.
Amazon's strategy bundles the premium experience into Prime, potentially boosting retention for its 200 million+ U.S. members while monetizing non-Prime users directly.
Rausch highlighted the hybrid approach: voice on Echo speakers and displays, text chat on Alexa.com and the app, and cross-device continuity. "Customers are interacting with Alexa+ more than twice as much," he said, citing deeper research, planning, and content generation.
The expansion follows months of gradual rollout. Alexa+ debuted in early 2025 as an "early access" program, requiring a waitlist or purchase of newer Echo devices. By late 2025, millions had tested it, providing feedback that shaped refinements in conversation flow, task automation, and reliability.
Industry analysts view the move as Amazon's bid to reclaim momentum in the voice assistant space, where market share has eroded amid competition from smartphones and other AI chatbots. Alexa+ addresses longstanding criticisms of the original — limited context, rigid commands, and basic responses — by embracing large language models for more human-like interactions.
Privacy remains a focus. Amazon emphasizes user controls, including voice history deletion and opt-outs for training data. The company says Alexa+ processes requests securely, with options to review and delete conversations.
Compatibility covers most Echo devices from recent years, Fire TV, Fire tablets, and the Alexa app. Older hardware may receive limited or no support. Samsung TVs with Alexa Built-in (2021-2025 models) will gain access soon.
The $19.99 standalone price drew scrutiny, as it's higher than Prime's monthly $14.99 equivalent, making the membership more attractive for Alexa+ users. Amazon positions it as a premium AI tier, similar to how competitors charge for advanced features.
Early reviews from beta users praised improved naturalness and task completion but noted occasional inaccuracies or limitations in niche requests. Amazon continues iterating, with updates expected throughout 2026.
The launch coincides with broader AI pushes at Amazon, including Nova models and integrations across AWS, advertising, and entertainment. Alexa+ serves as a consumer-facing showcase for the company's generative AI investments.
For Prime members, the free inclusion adds value amid rising competition for subscription loyalty. Non-members gain a low-barrier entry via the free web/app chat, potentially driving upgrades to full access or Prime.
As voice assistants evolve into proactive AI companions, Amazon's nationwide rollout marks a key milestone. With millions already engaged, Alexa+ aims to redefine how users interact with smart homes, entertainment, and daily tasks in an AI-driven era.
Amazon has not announced international availability yet, focusing first on U.S. refinement. The company plans ongoing enhancements based on usage data.
The expansion could accelerate adoption of voice AI, especially among Prime households already invested in Echo ecosystems. Whether Alexa+ recaptures dominance remains to be seen, but the broad access signals Amazon's commitment to staying competitive in the fast-moving AI landscape.
