“Vikings” season 5 will observe Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) becoming one of the main characters of the show. He will fight against the Vikings, particularly Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen). Meanwhile, showrunner Michael Hirst says that Ivar and Heahmund share a lot of similarities.

Heahmund was introduced in the show in the last segment of season 4 finale episode. He is seen consoling Widow Ordlaf (Tamaryn Payne) whose husband dies. However, soon after that he makes love with her. In the last shot of the finale episode, his sword is shown to the audience, which has a word written on it – ananyzapata. Meaning of the word and relevance of the same remains a mystery.

Hirst had revealed previously as well that Heahmund will be a threat to the Vikings. He will eventually come face to face with Ivar in “Vikings” season 5. However, at the same time, Hirst says there are a lot of similarities between the two characters.

“In the end, he (Heahmund) was bound to intersect with Ivar. There are elements to Ivar that are similar: the conflicted person, the fundamentalist. I think you just feel that there is something inevitable about those two characters coming together, which they will,” Hirst said.

Heahmund was a Saxon warrior. Hirst said warrior bishops were religious, high up in the church hierarchy and had great sword skills. They were fighters all prepared to go and fight against the Heathen Army. “They’re so fundamentalist, they’re so prepared to die in battle for their faith,” Hirst said.

Hirst admitted that Heahmund has a big role to play in the forthcoming season. In the finale episode of the season 4, fans saw that Ivar’s anger was taking control over his mind. He killed his own brother Sigurd because of that. Now, Heahmund – a somewhat similar character who also seems unstoppable – is making his way in the next season to battle against Ivar. It would be interesting to see them coming face to face in the forthcoming season.

Furthermore, Hirst said that fans must look forward to Ivar as a different side of him will be unveiled in the forthcoming season. He will be more ambitious and will use his anger constructively.

“I think I would have to say that Ivar is a new, great character. If you thought that Ragnar was great and astonishing, you will certainly see that his son Ivar matches up to him and is also a completely astonishing figure,” Hirst told Rotten Tomatoes.

“Vikings” season 5 will be launched this year itself. The air date has not been announced yet. (Read more on the link below.) The show airs on History channel in the US and on SBS One in Australia.
