‘Vikings’ season 5 - Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick)
Katheryn Winnick play Lagertha on ‘Vikings’ season 5. History

“Vikings” season 5 is set to return in late November, and if the official trailer is any indication, it’s going to be action-packed. Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) is coming for Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), but he’s not just trying to avenge his mother’s death. The Boneless wants to be king, and his ambition is set to tick off some of his brothers and cause a number of deaths.

Spoiler alert: This article contains plot details about the fifth season of “Vikings.” The new season premieres on November 29 in the US. Episodes from the series’ previous seasons are available for Australian viewers to watch on SBS.

The season 5 trailer – and presumably, the season premiere – opens up with Sigurd’s (David Lindström) funeral, which basically debunks the previous speculations that Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and Aslaug’s (Alyssa Sutherland) third son may have survived Ivar’s axe. Speaking of the Boneless, he can be seen raiding what looks to be an English castle. And his menacing smile is all over the place.

At the 00:17 mark of the trailer, a bloody Lagertha has a worried look on her face. Perhaps a close ally or relative is severely wounded right in front of her and is about to die. Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) also shows up in the preview. The warrior priest and Ivar are set to clash in an epic York battle.

It seems that Ivar has his hands full next season. It’s not just Heahmund and Lagertha that he’s going to have to deal with. He’s also set to face off with his brother Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and half-brother Björn (Alexander Ludwig) in “a war between brothers” that the Boneless proudly believes will make him the king of Kattegat.

In the “Vikings” season 5 trailer, Lagertha is joined by Ubbe, Halfdan (Jasper Pääkkönen), Torvi (Georgia Hirst) and Björn, who seems to be torn about the whole family feud. “A civil war can only bring tragedy,” Ragnar’s firstborn says. Meanwhile, Ivar has his brother Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) and King Harald (Peter Franzén) at his side.

The other interesting titbits in the trailer include Floki’s (Gustaf Skarsgård) soul searching in Iceland, Björn’s Sahara escapade and Astrid’s (Josefin Asplund) apparent abduction at the 00:40 mark. Maybe she’s the one Lagertha is worried about in the earlier part of the clip, but that remains to be seen. After all, a number of characters are expected to die in the civil war.

The premiere of “Vikings” season 5 is one of the most anticipated events in television, and fans can hardly wait for the November opener. Until then, stay connected with IBTimes Australia for updates about the History show.
