'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers: Nina Dobrev not returning, Kristen Stewart likely to take over

There are rumors that “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8 may not feature the return of star Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). Instead, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart may take over her role as the main interest of the Salvatore brothers.

The Hollywood Gossip revealed that “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8 was confirmed to be the last of the hit The CW drama. Nina Dobrev exited the show after the sixth season, although there were talks that she would return for the series finale. Her character, Elena, was last put in a spell-induced coma and was supposed to stay unconscious and out of the scenes until her friend Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) dies.

Previously, creator Julie Plec stated that she was interested in the return of Dobrev, particularly in the series finale. However, there are rumors that the actress may no longer come back in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8. Furthermore, the show producers will try to appease fans by bringing back Elena, to be played by another vampire movie star – Kristen Stewart. The shift is possible in the story, since Elena can body-jump into a new body. The concept of body-jumping is not entirely new in “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals.”

Ian Somerhalder, who plays Elena’s love interest, Damon Salvatore, also prefers not to work with his real-life ex-girlfriend on screen. Somerhalder’s wife, Nikki Reed, allegedly does not wish for him to do any more love scenes with Dobrev and his marriage might turn sour if he continues. On the other hand, Reed may be fine with her husband working alongside Stewart, whom she acted with in the “Twilight” trilogy. The news has not been confirmed yet and should be taken with a grain of salt.

In “The Vampire Diaries,” Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) were last put under an evil spell which compelled them to go on a murder spree. Stefan (Paul Wesley), in the meantime, is very much in love with Caroline (Candice King). It is still unknown how he will react when Elena wakes up in the new season in the form of Stewart, if the rumors are true. More updates and details on “The Vampire Diaries” are expected soon.
