"Twerk" is becoming the latest craze to hit the social media world today: from Miley Cyrus' controversial raunchy performance at VMAs 2013 to another controversial Australian prime minister candidate Clive Palmer "twerking" like Miley Cyrus.

Now, the Oxford dictionary added "twerk" in the list of their words with the following definition:

twerk, v.: dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.

And to make things all the more interesting, Morgan Freeman, in his stint as an anchor for one day on HLN, had recited the meaning of "twerk" in his very popular "narrating voice".

"The word 'twerking' has now been added to the Oxford Dictionary. Here's the definition they gave: 'To dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and low squatting stance,'" freeman said.

According to various articles, "twerking" started as early as the 90's and its popularity should not be credited to Miley Cyrus alone.

The New York Post wrote that "twerk" is a dance craze and term which is believed to have originated from New Orleans at the end of the 80's and early 90's.

"You'd have the DJ call out a [sometimes nonsensical] word or phrase, and people would just interpret it. He'd say, "Do the pork chop" or "Do the Johnny" or "Twerk for me"" as explained to the New York Post by Millisia White, an artistic director of the New Orleans Society of Dance's Baby Doll Ladies.

An article from Allston Pudding Music Blog said that "twerk" was first started by Miami Musicians as they make popular bounce music back in 1985 with a sound just right for "twerking."

The New York Post added that searches from Google for the term "twerk" were practically non-existent until Apr 2011. But the searches for the term boomed in the end of 2011 and in Sept of 2013, Google searches for "twerk" had already exploded.

If anyone searches for the term "twerking" on YouTube, search results obtained can reach up to 3.8 million results with videos featuring different people "twerking".
