Japanese fishermen have caught a bag filled with local currencies amounting to $145,000 off the coast of Ofunato city in Japan's northeastern prefecture of Iwate.

There were 1,000 10,000-yen notes inside the bag, city official Kou Ueno said, according to the Associated Press. He said the bag may be related to the deadly tsunami that hit Ofunato on March 11.

The catch made on Oct. 8 was turned over to local authorities as there is no sign identifying its owner. The authorities are also not providing other information about the bag so they can determine if a person who will claim it is the rightful owner.

Authorities will wait for six months for any claimant to come forward. If there is no claimant, the finders can keep it. That will be a toss between the captain, owner or crew of the ship.

It was not the first time that cash related to the tsunami have been found. Previously, safes and envelopes with cash were also found and these were also turned over to authorities.

When the tsunami struck Ofunato, 9,672 fishing vessels were destroyed and 108 or 111 local ports were damaged. Almost all fish processing centers were wiped out.
