“Samurai Jack,” the mythical time-travelling warrior, is making a much-awaited comeback after 13 long years. Cartoon Network, the show's host, previously announced that the series’ 5th season would premiere in 2016. It however did not push through. But now, news is abuzz that the animated series is slated for a season 5 scheduled to premiere March 11.

The season 5 premiere will be a much darker, even more dangerous version of the tale, compared with the previous seasons. According to spoilers, the new “Samurai Jack” season will pick up 50 years after the events pursued in the last season. Previously, the demon Aku had destroyed everything Jack had loved. To avenge them, Samurai Jack will be seen going after the demon in the upcoming season.

A trailer for “Samurai Jack” season 5 has already been released. According to Collider, the trailer is “bloody,” “violent” and “vengeful.” Writer Darrick Bachmann has described the new season as a story of redemption.

“In the original series, he was a very heroic person on a very rigid quest. Now we pick up with him and it’s many years after the fact and he’s a little bit lost,” Bachmann said. “So, it’s a story of redemption and him trying to find who he is again.”

While in the trailer the warrior looks weary and unkempt, the burning light in his eyes however suggests that he is still up on his mission to destroy the evil shape-shifter. Series creator Genndy Tartakovsky, who refused to reveal spoiler details, said “Samurai Jack” season 5 will be more dramatic compared to the previous ones.

“So, what’s changed in Jack’s world is a lot,” Tartakovsky told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s a lot of drama that’s happened and until the first episode airs I don’t want to give it away because I think it’s such a cool reveal of everything that I’m not gonna say anything.” He further added that the finale of the last episode and the first episode of “Samurai Jack” season 5 will have no connection.

“Samurai Jack” is the story of a young prince from feudal Japan. Having trained for years in the art of sword fighting, and with the help of his father’s magical katana, Jack challenges a shape-shifting demon named Aku and eventually defeats him in a duel. The demon however creates a time portal and sends the prince to the future. The latest season will see Jack return from the future to take Aku down.

"Samurai Jack" season 5 is set to premiere March 11 at 11:30 p.m. EST (March 12 at 3:30 p.m. AEDT) on Cartoon Network.
