Another rugby league star could follow Jarryd Hayne’s successful transition to the NFL.

South Sydney Rabbitohs prop Tom Burgess is planning to make his own transition from the Australian rugby league to American football. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Burgess worked out for the New York Giants as tight end.

Burgess is one of the three Burgess siblings at the Rabbitohs. He recently extended his deal with the team until 2018, but the English rugby athlete has previously expressed an interest in playing American football and following Hayne’s footsteps.

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire has been supportive of Tom’s aspirations to play for an NFL team. Maguire said the experience of trying out for an the Giants would be beneficial for Burgess, adding that the Rabbitohs can learnt a lot from the rugby league star’s trip to the US.

"We're fully supportive of our players trying to improve themselves," Maguire said, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. "This will provide a unique and valuable experience for Thomas, one that he will no doubt learn a lot from and in turn be able to bring back to the Rabbitohs for the coming season."

The report also noted that Burgess underwent testing for speed, strength, and agility with the Giants. The 23-year-old Burgess also reportedly arranged trails with a number of other NFL teams before the start of his preseason training with the Rabbitohs.

Meanwhile, Hayne is still trying to wait for his chance to suit up for the San Francisco 49ers after being sacked from the team’s active roster last month. Reports have surfaced that the former Eel could get back into the 49ers’ active squad at the expense of Bruce Ellington, who committed two muffed punts in San Francisco’s last two games.

Special teams coach Thomas McGaughey was critical of Ellington’s errors, saying that another mistake could lead to his dismissal from game day actions, potentially opening a chance for Hayne to reclaim his punt returning job. But 49ers coach Jim Tomsula down played any of McGaughey’s claims, and seems to back Ellington to retain his role.

“I hope he didn’t say that,” Tomsula told reporters on Thursday, reports News. “I would not want him to have said that. I’m sure he didn’t say it like that.”
