Mutant Football League, the spiritual successor to the 1993 arcade classic Mutant League Football, will be making its long-awaited debut later this year. According to reports, the game developers have successfully raised funds courtesy a Kickstarter campaign that was initiated at the start of the month.

In 2013, Michael Mendheim, the creative director, had initiated a similar Kickstarter campaign but managed to raise only US$141,821 (AU$185969) of the US$750,000 (AU$983348) goal for a mobile version of the game. This time around, the game is focused on PlayStation4, Xbox One and PC, a decision that has evidently paid off. The latest Kickstarter initiative has already passed its US$60,000 (AU$78,666) goal with 27 days left on the campaign, leading the developers to offer a playable pre-alpha PC demo for backers who pledged $1 or more.

According to the Kickstarter page, "Mutant Football League is an NFL Blitz arcade-style football game, with nasty mutants, ferocious monsters, deadly chainsaws, and lots of gory player deaths, along with some edgy, satirical humour that parodies America's favourite sport."

Mutant Football League to include special halftime show

The game's developers have asked the backers to submit suggestions on how to further enhance the game with the additional funds. "As you generate ideas please understand the dev team can't be creating exotic new systems or complex features. What we can do is to build on top of what we already have, make it great and make it polished. We can also consider a few smaller features like a fun halftime show.

"You've invested your money in us and we need to deliver the project we promised. Also, remember just because a feature you really want isn't getting implemented for the release, doesn't mean we won't be working on that feature down the road," read the latest update published on Wednesday.

The page further noted that the game is nearly 75 percent complete while the Online Multiplayer is approximately 65 percent done. The additional funds (over and above the US$60,000, AU$78,666) would be used to add additional teams, incorporate dirty tactics, improve the Artificial Intelligence, among others.

While noting that a closed alpha release is expected in Apr. 2017 and a potential PC release in Oct. 2017, the developers stressed that they won't compromise on quality. "Please know and understand, we will always prioritize quality over quantity but with a game this polished, ready to play, we know it shouldn't be long before it's in your hands and your opponent finds themselves in the morgue." A final release for consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) is expected sometime in the Spring of 2018. Stay tuned for the latest on Mutant Football League.
