Just days after release, the team at NetherRealm are likely to be popping champagne corks and celebrating hard. The company has announced that “Mortal Kombat X,” the latest game in its long-running fighting game franchise, has registered the biggest launch in franchise history.

The news comes via “Mortal Kombat” co-creator and creative director Ed Boon’s Twitter account. The news is especially impressive considering the fact that the launch of “MKX” on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the consoles with by far the largest install bases, was recently delayed. That version of the game is still in development, by High Voltage Software.

“Thank you everyone for making ‘Mortal Kombat X’ the biggest launch in ‘MK’ history. You made the game far exceed our wildest expectations,” he said.

As noted by Gamespot, Boon’s comments come right as a new “MKX” patch hits, bringing with it gameplay changes as well as a classic costume for Lin Kuei Ninja Sub-Zero. This latest patch follows a prior PC-only patch which game gamers an extra 10,000 Krypt Koins, squashed bugs and improved general performance on the PC. The 1.02 patch notes are as follows:

General - Throws (regular or command grabs) will no longer sometimes connect on a grounded reacting opponent off a counter hit

Shinnok (Impostor) - He can now control the location of a stolen Goro Stomp.

Subzero (Grandmaster) - Combos on a grounded opponent frozen by the Ice Klone will now scale properly.

Takeda (Ronin) - Added a new move “Quick Kall” (Down, Towards, Front Punch) which quickly returns a dropped blade without doing an attack.

Takeda (Shirai Ryu) – He will now always teleport to the other side when doing the Air Shirai Ryu Port

IGN also reports that players have picked on the subtle introduction of the “Mortal Kombat” franchises first ever gay character. The revelation is made during a flashback cutscene, when Raiden urges Kung Jin to join the Shaolin Monks. Jin replies that he will not be accepted, to which Raiden replies that the Monks care only for what is in his heart, and hot whom his heart desires. To make matters crystal clear, NetherRealm cinematic director Dominic Cianciolo congratulated observant fans, who asked if Kung Jun was indeed gay, for picking up on the subtle scene.

“Mortal Kombat X” was released on April 14, on PS4, Xbox One and PC. A release on PS3 and Xbox 360 is set to follow this summer.
