Teams are running out of time to decide if they’re going to be buyers or sellers at the 2022 MLB trade deadline. The New York Mets are expected to be one of the most active buyers in baseball. The decision for another National League team is not as clear.

The San Francisco haven’t yet decided to become sellers before the deadline, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. Contenders are waiting for the Giants to make their best players available, following their recent skid.

San Francisco has lost all seven of its games since the end of the All-Star break. The losing streak has dropped the Giants to 3.5 games out of the NL wild-card race. San Francisco is in fifth place in the wild-card standings. The Philadelphia Phillies are in between the Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals, the current holders of the third and final wild-card spot.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 17.5 games ahead of the Giants for first place in the NL West. San Francisco edged out Los Angeles for the division title with 107 wins last season. The Dodgers eliminated the Giants in the NLDS.

After posting MLB’s best regular-season record just one season ago, San Francisco is holding out hope that it can make the playoffs this year. If the Giants accept that a trip to the playoffs is highly unlikely, pitcher Carlos Rodon and outfielder Joc Pederson could be traded within the next week.

The Mets are looking to add players, but they probably won’t make sense as a trade partner for the Giants in the event that San Francisco becomes a seller. New York is looking to acquire multiple receivers, according to The Athletic. New York could go after Baltimore Orioles First baseman Trey Mancini or Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras, SNY’s Andy Martino reports.

Mets reliever Drew Smith is expected to go on the injured list, prompting the team to seek bullpen help. New York has dealt with injuries to its pitching staff all season long, though starter Jacob deGrom is about to make his 2022 debut.

New York has been connected to many of the best hitters that are available. The Mets can’t be discounted from the Juan Soto Sweepstakes.

The Mets have already traded for DH Daniel Vogelbach. Washington Nationals first baseman Josh Bell is also an option for New York.

After sweeping the New York Yankees, the Mets have a three-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The Mets are 9.5 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals for the final NL playoff spot.
