The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in a historic move that is celebrated globally. Edith Windsor and Roberta Kaplan have won the battle in behalf of same-sex couples oppressed by DOMA. #LoveisLove has gone viral, thanks to the U.S. President's tweet.

"DOMA is unconstitutional," the SC ruling said. In reaction to the news, U.S. President Barack Obama took to Twitter to shout out #LoveisLove. Ricky Martin and a lot of other celebrities also rejoiced via the social microblogging site.

In his ruling, Justice Anthony Kennedy said:

"The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity. By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment. This opinion and its holding are confined to those lawful marriages."

What is DOMA?

DOMA was approved by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It prevented same-sex couples from receiving benefits available to other married couples under federal law. As same-sex marriages are legal in some states, DOMA is one of the most frustrating hurdles for countless same-sex couples in the U.S.

As the name suggested, DOMA was supposed to protect marriage albeit in the most ambiguous of ways.

In reaction to the SC ruling, Edith Windsor, the original plaintiff in DOMA case, has been quoted as saying, "I wanna go to Stonewall right now!"
