A new picture of “The Last Kingdom” season 2 has been released online. The picture shows Alfred on a horse, passing by a village in his country. Filming of the new season wrapped in November, and it is currently in the post production phase of development.

The following article contains spoilers from the first season of “The Last Kingdom.” Readers who haven’t watched the show are advised to stop here.

Alfred (David Dawson) was last seen hiding in a swamp with Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon). In the finale the two characters came together to take on the Danes, who have conquered almost all the kingdoms in the realm. A new picture [see below] shows the last Saxon king ride out in his horse.

The picture was taken on the last day of filming in November. However, fans should note that filming usually takes place out of order, and the picture may not be from the finale episode of the next season.

So, what will Alfred find on the road in “The Last Kingdom” season 2? For starters, he may find a lot of suffering of his people. With no army to defend them, the people were left to fend for themselves, and many of them lost their wealth and lives due to raids by the Danes and others.

The caption of the picture teases Alfred’s readiness for battle. The king’s pride had prevented him from using the talents of Uhtred for most part of the first season. However, he may now value the young warrior’s counsel. “Bring it on,” the caption reads.

Uhtred also went through a transformation on the show. The warrior’s fiery temper cooled a little with time. During his time with the king at the swamp, he also felt sympathy for him on account of the suffering of Alfred’s child.

Alfred and Uhtred will now have to find a way to fight back the Danes. Their main nemesis this time around is Guthrum (Thomas W. Gabrielsson), who is both intelligent and ruthless. The character was willing to learn and change, after his interactions with the Saxons. This change, however, may not be welcome to many of the other Danes.

“The Last Kingdom” season 2 is set to premiere sometime this year. The exact release date hasn’t been announced yet. A teaser was released recently. The show is currently not airing on Foxtel, but in Australia it can be watched on Netflix.
