The first trailer of “Independence Day: Resurgence” has been released online by 20th Century Fox. The video shows that the story in the movie takes place 20 years after the events of the 1996 movie “Independence Day.”

Jeff Goldblum will be reprising his role as David Levinson in the new movie. Levinson was the computer genius from the first movie, in which he was able to disable the defence system of the aliens by uploading a virus on their mother ship.

After defeating the alien invading forces, the governments across the globe will collaborate to mount a unified defence for the possible second invasion. The governments will use the technology from the alien ships that they brought down in the first movie.

However, the threat from space may not be the only worry for the people of Earth. The trailer shows Levinson being called to a desert location, where he finds something shocking. The first movie showed that some bureaucrats in the US knew about aliens and there really is an Area 51, where scientists conduct experiments on crashed alien ships and alien dead bodies.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” will show the aliens coming back with an even bigger force this time around and the defence preparedness of Earth may prove to be insufficient.

Bill Pullman will also be reprising his role as President Whitmore. Whitmore had a conversation with one of the aliens in the 1996 movie and the alien had shown him images of what they plan to do on Earth.

In the new movie, Whitmore will get dreams of the enemies coming back to try and conquer the Earth. The trailer also has a voice over that is the inspiring speech that Whitmore gave in the first movie, just before the final battle.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” is slated to be released on June 24, 2016 in the US. The producers have so far not announced the release date of the movie for Australia. Some of the cast members of the movie include Liam Hemsworth (Jake Morrison), Joey King (Sam), William Fichtner (General Adams), Maika Monroe (Patricia Whitmore) and Vivica A. Fox (Jasmine).
