Charlie Hunnam has quit “Fifty Shades of Grey.” After months of deliberating who’s the right actor to play the enigmatic Christian Grey on film, producers are scrambling yet again to find a replacement for the 33-year-old actor after he abruptly dropped out of the production.

Hunnam was cast as the wealthy Christian in the film adaptation of the “mummy porn” novel of the same name by E.L. James in September, along with actress Dakota Johnson as his romantic interest and the books’ lead, Anastasia Steele. The news was met with horror by a number of FSOG fans, majority of whom wanted “White Collar” star Matt Bomer and “Gilmore Girls” actress Alexis Bledel to take the lead roles.

And despite the protest over his casting, Hunnam said he was excited about playing Christian in the film, adding that he was prepared to shoot explicit sex scenes as expected in the book.

“My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called ‘Queer as Folk.’ It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man. I mean I’m 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady,” he previously said.

But alas! FSOG isn’t the film where he can finally put to use his knowledge on shooting sex scenes. In a statement released by Universal film studio, it’s announced that the “Sons of Anarchy” TV program star has quit the film due to scheduling conflict.

“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” the studio stated, which was first reported by Deadline.

James has posted a short message for Hunnam on her Twitter after the news broke.

I wish Charlie all the best. x

Hunnam’s replacement is yet to be announced.

The film was reportedly scheduled to begin on November 5 in Vancouver, and is due to hit theatres in August of 2014.
