“The Big Bang Theory” Season 9 is set to premiere on Monday, Sept. 21. Steve Molaro, showrunner of the show, said that if there is a time jump in the premiere episode of the new season, it will not be a long one. The opening episode is expected to reveal whether Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) got married in Las Vegas, and it is also likely to deal with the new relationship status of Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons).

The previous season wrapped up with two major developments related to the two much-loved couples. Amy broke up with Sheldon, saying she needs some time to re-evaluate their situation, and after that, Sheldon revealed to the audience that he was planning to put a ring on her finger. He took the ring out from his desk’s drawer and asked Gollum, the expert on rings, what he should do with it.

On the other hand, Leonard and Penny decided to get married that night in Las Vegas. The two set out to Vegas and it almost looked like nothing would go wrong for the excited couple but then Leonard opened his mouth and told Penny that he kissed a girl during his stay at a ship in the North Sea. After this confession, the atmosphere in the car turned chilly and it did not look like Leonard and Penny were going to say “I do” that night.

Also in the season finale episode of “The Big Bang Theory” Season 8, Raj (Kunal Nayyar) was planning to break up with Emily (Laura Spencer) but he ended up blurting out that he loves her during their night date at a graveyard. And Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Howard (Simon Helberg) were unable to tell Stuart (Kevin Sussman) that he needs to move out of their house.

In an interview given to The Hollywood Reporter just after “The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 wrapped up, Molaro did not reveal much details about the new season but said that Sheldon and Amy are at an interesting, messy situation, adding, “It seems very real and I think it's exciting that we're shaking things up.” He also said that Sheldon is “clearly fond of her” and both of them are not done speaking. Molaro added, “he’s so fond of her -- something is going to happen between them, I'm sure.”

Speaking about how Sheldon and Amy’s break up will affect the group dynamic, Molaro told THR that they are excited to find that out. “It ripples through a lot of relationships and how they both handle this and what happens moving forward is what we're so excited to jump in on season nine with,” he said.

Molaro did not reveal whether there will be Leonard and Penny’s wedding this fall. He said that the couple is still driving to Vegas but the mood is “certainly a little chilly.” The showrunner said that Leonard and Penny are at an interesting place and they will find out what happens next when they get to Vegas.

He said to THR that Bernadette and Howard are trying to make the home of Howard's mom 'their' home, which feels like an interesting thing and the two will be dealing with that. With Stuart continuing to live with them, there are a lot of fun stuff to come. And Raj, according to Molaro, will have to determine if he has it in him to do what is right for him, even if it means being alone.
