AVG, the popular Internet and mobile security firm announced that the firm will be releasing a major update to their AVG Family Safety for Apple's iOS and for Windows Phone.

AVG is offering this update in two types: the free version and the paid version.

Free Version

For the free version, it provides an alternative browser which can block pornographic websites through a blacklist and a data feed provided by LinkScanner. Aside from that, the company's link scanning technology also monitors other harmful activities such as phishing and blocking malicious non-pornographic sites. Aside from that, parents can also monitor the online activity of their children as well as blocking sites for every login.

Paid version

As for the paid version, it would cost around US$19.99 per year and it includes the same features with the free version though there are added incentives. These additional features include an alternative Web browser, automatic link scanning c/o AVG's LinkScanner tech, and a reasonable set of parental control tools.

In the announcement made by the AVG, it highlighted two major goals for the company which includes having a free, secure and family-friendly web browser to help protect children from inappropriate websites and keeping the whole family safe from scams, fraud, phishing and potentially malicious online content. JR Smith, the CEO of AVG Technologies explained the reason behind this free app stating "Online scams and attacks are on the rise and can occur on any platform with access to the web. AVG aims to protect its users wherever they go. With AVG Family Safety for iOS and Windows Phone, we provide our users the peace of mind that they and their children are protected against online threats on these mobile platforms too."

The app can be downloaded through Windows Phone Marketplace for Windows Phone and the App store for Apple devices. Minimum requirements for downloading includes Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) for Windows Phone and iOS 4.3 and above for iOS devices.

AVG has long been in the mobile and security industry and has an estimated 114 million active users to date.
