Apple's smartwatch went up for pre-order on Friday April 10. Almost a million people pre-ordered the highly anticipated Apple Watch. The official date for the launch is April 24.

According to data from research firm Slice Intelligence, 957,000 people in the U.S. pre-ordered the watch. The firm reported that each Apple Watch buyer ordered an average of 1.3 watches, spending $503.83 per watch.

The Sport range starts at $349, the mid-priced Watch line starts at $549 and the premium Edition line starts at $10,000. Buyers ordering an Apple Watch Sport spent $382.83 per watch while those ordering the Apple Watch spent $707.04.

Most buyers opted on spending for the pricier case and spending the minimum possible on the band. A third of the buyers chose the cheapest Sport band, in black or white. The Slice report also stated that the black Sports band was the most popular band option amongst both the Sport and Apple Watch lines.

When it came to the case, most of the buyers opted for the larger 42mm case with 71 per cent selecting the larger case. This was evident in both the Sport edition and the Apple Watch.

According to Forbes, Slice’s data did not include the data from the other eight countries that the Apple Watch went up for pre-sale in. These included Canada, Australia, U.K., Germany, France, Japan, China and Hong Kong. The report states that data from those countries could vary drastically from the U.S.A.

When Apple's debut smartwatch launch is compared with its other product launches, there is a massive difference. The first generation iPhone only sold 270,000 units in the first day while the iPad sold 300,000 units on the day of its launch.

Unlike the past launches, Apple approached the launch of its smartwatch differently. In the past, consumers had to line up for hours to buy devices on their launch days but this time around consumers could pre-order the watches on the Apple website.

Slice also reported that 72 per cent of the smartwatch buyers have bought another Apple product in the past two years. The data firm also added that a fifth had pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus a matter of months ago.
