Andy Murray is looking forward to win big tournaments next season in his chase for the World No. 1 spot. The Scot knows it would be hard to overtake Novak Djokovic as world’s top-ranked player, but he is optimistic that he can get good results from next year’s big events to earn enough points and boost his world rankings.

“Look, the goal is to try to win tournaments, try and win the big events,” Murray said when asked about his thoughts on being World No. 1 after his third round win against John Isner 6-7(4) 6-4 6-4. “If you do that, the ranking will go in the right direction.”

The British tennis star knows he will be able to get a good chance at knocking off the Serb by winning grand slam tournaments. His grand slam performance this year includes a runner-up finish at the Australian Open, two semifinal appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon, and a fourth-round showing at the US Open.

“This year, although I’m a long way behind Novak in the rankings, a few matches can change that significantly - grand slam semifinals and finals, they’re the matches that are for big, big points, that’s something, if I want to get to No. 1 in the world, need to win a couple more of them so hopefully next year I’ll be able to do that.”

Murray started this season ranked sixth in the world. In August, he claimed the second spot in the world rankings for the first time since 2013 after winning his third Rogers Cup title when he ended his eight-match losing streak against Djokovic in the finals of the said Montreal event, his 11th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title.

The two-time grand slam champion, who did not drop serve in his three-set victory over Isner, will face Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Going into the match, Murray said he feels his tennis is in good place as he had been serving well and had less unforced errors. He is looking to extend his two-match winning streak over the Czech this season. However, Murray trails behind Berdych in their clashes in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event 1-4. Prior the Shanghai tournament, Murray is 61-10. He won four titles this season
