The new baddie, Gareth (Andrew J. West), is scary. After looking at some of "The Walking Dead" Season 5 teaser videos, he indeed looks like a crazy character who is all set to crush Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and other survivors. However, West explains that his character has many layers.

Andrew West revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that this character Gareth is "very complicated and multidimensional."

West was asked about how he looks at his character in "The Walking Dead" Season 5. He mentioned that Gareth is a practical person and his main goal is to survive in the post-apocalyptic world. He continued and said that Gareth is like Rick Grimes or Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun).

Gareth has accepted the fact that the society has changed after the outbreak and the "old way just doesn't work anymore."

"The world is different now. And the old rules just need to be reexamined. And he's willing to do that. And I think that's where the leader qualities come in. He is willing to sort of abandon certain ideas about the way the world used to be and find what the world needs to be now. And he's he's sort of a strong-willed guy, too," West said.

He doesn't look at Gareth as the bad guy in the show.

"Everybody, of course, wants to believe that they're doing good, but you're thinking about what it is that you're trying to accomplish. And that's what I love about Gareth," West explained.

The actor said the Gareth is after things and he is trying to achieve his goal. West also stated that the cool thing is the relationship between his character and Rick. The tension between these two characters is, of course, out there because they both want to survive and are quite strong-willed.

It will be quite interesting to see Rick and Gareth come face to face in the upcoming season.

"The Walking Dead" Season 5, Episode 1 airs Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 on AMC.
