The last part of “Vikings” season 4 episode 20 introduced fans to a new and certainly interesting character played by the incredibly talented actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Bishop Heahmund isn’t only a man of God, he’s also a warrior. And he apparently transcends the boundaries that ordinary men of the cloth are supposed to abide by, as shown by how the bishop “consoled” a poor widow following her deceased husband’s funeral, which Heahmund himself oversaw.

Spoiler alert: This article contains plot details about “Vikings” season 5. An official announcement has yet to be made regarding the air date of the season premiere. Episodes from the series’ previous seasons are available for Australian viewers to watch on SBS.

Heahmund is expected to be one of the main antagonists next season along with Harald (Peter Franzén). In the “Vikings” season 5 sneak peek, the bishop can be seen striking Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), who appears to have been captured by Heahmund and company. It’s not exactly clear what kind of weapon or object he hits Ubbe with, but it looks like it doesn’t bode well for Ragnar’s son as he is being surrounded by Heahmund and his men. In the clip, the bishop clearly has him at his mercy, and only time will tell if Ubbe gets out of his predicament alive.

Ubbe can also be seen getting cosy with Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) in the season 5 preview (see related story below), but it remains to be seen if the two of them are really getting along. Maybe Lagertha, after gaining the trust of Ubbe, later goes behind his back and gives him up to Heahmund. Ubbe did attempt to kill her once, but only because Lagertha put his mother Auslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) to rest. On the other hand, maybe it’s Lagertha who rescues Ubbe from Heahmund, which could be the reason why there’s a seeming alliance between the two.

“Vikings” season 5 episode 1 could have a possible November air date. The crew is presumably done shooting the first half of the season, but the second part is still on-going as evidenced by Winnick’s Instagram post showing a “Vikings” season 5 episode 16 script (see post below). Also, post-production could obviously take a while, so a November launch isn’t far-fetched.

The series likewise averages nine months per break, and that includes the season 4A and season 4B recess. Here’s hoping that the showrunners wrap up filming and editing fast so the series returns early, although an air date may have already been decided. The only thing that’s guaranteed is that “Vikings” season 5 will be back this year.
