Jessica Watson is an extraordinary teenager. It is unknown though whether her taste in music is just the same with the music the girls her age listen to.

Sony Music Entertainment announced on Wednesday that the record-breaking teen sailor is set to release a compilation album containing 20 of her favorite songs.

According to MySpace Australia content manager Dan Stapleton, the musical tastes of Australian girls Ms Watson's age are varied, but dominated by a few pop favourites.

A compilation CD from an "average seventeen-year-old" girl might probably have tracks from Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Usher and vary in genre, from pop to indie rock and heavier styles.

"Rising star Cody Simpson is also popular," Mr Stapleton said, based on the most-played tracks on MySpace music.

"Indie/rock acts like Paramore and Angus & Julia Stone receive lots of plays, too.

"At the heavier end of the spectrum, local punk [and] hardcore acts Parkway Drive and The Amity Affliction are consistently amongst the most played bands for this demographic on MySpace."

According to Queensland University of Technology music expert Steve Dillon, Ms Watson's selection could be suggestive of the "genre-hopping" attitudes of her generation.

"Music is an important part of identity formation," he said.

"During adolescence, musical tastes are particularly important.

"A teenager's taste in music is influenced by their need to express themselves but also to connect with their peer group and their playlists reflect that."

Meanwhile, the young sailor claims that music helped her get through the months she was alone onboard Ella's Pink Lady. It was also a source of comfort during the more challenging times.

"Singing along to my favourite songs even kept me sane at times," she said as today's album announcement came through.

"I am so excited to be able to share my journey with all the people that have supported me along the way."

The compilation album is set for release in August coinciding with the release of Ms Watson's book True Spirit.
