Miss Universe candidates from the Philippines are notoriously known to always nab the "first place," a step shy of the crown. Janine Tugonon, the country's bet for 2012, placed in the runner-ups circle, following the same fate as Shamcey Supsup (2011), and Miriam Quiambao (1999). As expected, Janine provided an eloquent answer to Nigel Barker's question "Do you believe that speaking English should be prerequisite for Miss Universe 2012?"

Tugonon answered, "For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It's about being able to influence and inspire other people. If you have a heart to serve and a strong mind to show people then you can be Miss Universe." Many believe that the essence and meaning of her answer overpowered Miss USA's simple response to a regret-related final question.

Also, some are suggesting that the pageant being held in the winner, Olivia Culpo's, home country of USA helped her nab the title, and that if the coronation night, Miss Philippines would have surely been deemed winner. Though still proud of Janine placing first, Filipino celebrities who have experience in beauty pageants voiced out their reactions on Twitter. One saying that though Miss USA is deserved to win, Janine "should have" won.

Also, Janine has graduated college, in one of the Philippines' most prestigious universities, University of Santo Tomas. On the other hand, Olivia left her studies in Boston University to pursue her acting and pageant careers during sophomore year. Also, it is reported that Olivia has no plans to return to school because the university will not advance her career or help her in any way. Is she a better role model than someone who took the time to finish tertiary education before joining beauty contests?
