An Australia-based resource company has claimed it has found possible wreckage of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 thousands of miles away from the current search area. According to GeoResonance, the multispectral images it obtained show potential debris in the northern Bay of Bengal.

The Malaysian Defence Department said countries involved in the search of Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, will investigate the alleged wreckage sighting. The Bay of Bengal is about 118 miles or 190 kilometres south of Bangladesh. The location is far from the current underwater search efforts in the southern Indian Ocean.

The Australian resource survey company clarified that it was not saying officially that it has found the missing Malaysia Airlines plane but only asked for authorities to investigate their findings.

GeoResonance uses radiation chemistry, imaging and other types of technology to look for gas, oil and mineral deposits. In the search for Flight MH370, the crew used the same type of technology to look for wreckage on the ocean floor and check for the presence of chemical elements associated with a Boeing 777. These chemical elements can be from titanium, aluminium, jet fuel residue and other elements.

The resource exploration company compared the multispectral images taken between March 5 and 10. The Malaysia Airlines plane disappeared on March 8 while on its way to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. Radar communications and tracking indicated that the plane had reached its cruising altitude without any problem. It suddenly went off its course for still unknown reasons before heading west across the Malaysian peninsula.

After comparing the images before and after the plane's disappearance, GeoResonance discovered a specific area where the data showed differences.

Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Australia and China have been aware of the new development in the search of the missing plane. He said Malaysia is currently in touch with its international partners investigate the credibility of the new information.

In a statement, GeoResonance said it has tried to locate the plane before search efforts were moved to the southern Indian Ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia. The company said its only motivation was to help the families of passengers and crew who went missing along with the plane. GeoResonance knew it has the technology to do so.

An underwater signal believed to be coming from black boxes of Flight MH370 was detected off western Australia on April 8, but since then, no evidence of the plane has been found.
