Episode 2 of “Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3 continued the search for agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) as Fitz and the rest of the team asked for the help of an Asgardian to unlock the secrets of the monolith that took Simmons.

In the premiere episode, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) was frustrated that the Kree monolith did not do anything even after he got hold of the artifact. The search for more Inhumans was also underway.

Episode 2, titled “The Purpose in the Machine,” started with a flashback to Gloucestershire, England in 1839. Men who appear to be nobles randomly take pebbles out of a bag. All of the pebbles were black, except for one, which was white. The man who drew the white pebble was given gifts by the others for his journey, before he cautiously approached a door with a strange symbol on it. He is pushed through the door, but it suddenly locks, and it is revealed a cell with the monolith was behind the door. The monolith consumed the man and screams were heard from outside.

In the present day, Daisy (Chloe Bennet) and Mack (Henry Simmons) argue about Joey becoming a team member, before they are interrupted by Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance (Nick Blood), who tell them about Fitz and the monolith. Fitz explained that the substance on his finger is called “impossible sand,” which is a billion years older than Earth. It should have originated from another planet via the monolith’s portal. Fitz gives Coulson (Clark Gregg) a list of the things he might need.

Coulson goes and asks for the help of Professor Elliot Randolph (Peter MacNicol), an Asgardian who was assigned on the other planet. Randolph goes with the group to investigate the walls of a castle in Gloucestershire that had the same symbol. They had the monolith brought to the castle, which seemed to perfectly fit a pit at the location. A portal opens when the monolith is in place, and Fitz throws himself inside to find Jemma.

Dr. Andrew Garner (Andrew Howard) contacts Melinda May (Ming-na Wen) to tell her about Simmons’ miraculous return. Simmons suddenly wakes up and realizes that Fitz is beside her.

Episode 3 of “Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will air next on Oct. 13 on ABC.
