The trophy and tiara given to Maria Jose Alvarado when she became Miss Honduras World 2014 are seen at her house in Santa Barbara November 19, 2014. The bodies of Alvarado, 19, and her sister Sofia, 23, were found buried near a river in the mountainous region of Santa Barbara in western Honduras, said Leandro Osorio, head of the criminal investigation unit. The sisters went missing November 13, when they were seen leaving a party in a car without a license plate in Santa Barbara, a coffee-growing region where drug gangs are active. Alvarado, a student who aspired to become a career diplomat, had been due to take part in the Miss World pageant that starts on Thursday and culminates in the final in London on December 14. So as not to be suspected as the gunman, Plutarco Ruiz, the self-confessed killer of Miss Honduras Mary Jose Alvarado and her sister Sofia Trinidad, even came to the Alvarado residence after the two went missing on Thursday and invited the family to lunch. He returned for several days to help search for the women, disclosed Claudio Cecilio Munoz, the maternal uncle of the ill-fated siblings.

Munoz clarified that Ruiz was a suitor of Trinidad, not her boyfriend as previously reported. "We didn't file a complaint right away because we were waiting for a telephone call asking for ransom. On Saturday their mother and I went to put in a complaint and the killer was with us," AOL quoted Munoz.

Ruiz, who said he shot Trinidad out of a jealous rage for dancing with another man at a birthday party the two attended, admitted to investigators that he shot the elder sister first. Maria Jose tried to flee, but Ruiz shot her twice in the back, ending the 19-year-old model and TV host's dream of bagging the Miss World title on Dec 14.

Eduardo Zablah, the organiser of the Miss Honduras contest, said it would not replace Maria Jose in the global beauty competition being held in London, which brings down the number of candidates to 119. Her gown and national costume were packed and Alvarado was ready to fly to the UK to compete when she and her sister were abducted. Their bodies were found on Wednesday after Ruiz confessed and led police to a river near Santa Barbara.
