Marvel Studios is keen on giving the blockbuster hit “Guardians of the Galaxy” a follow-up. Since early 2015, the pre-production casting has already started.

Marvel reportedly wanted to cast Matthew McConaughey as the villain for the latest instalment, but the actor turned it down, according to Variety. In an earlier interview with Comic Book, the actor teased that he had been offered major roles by the DC and Marvel camp.

“I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with you what are – or were. Yeah I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it,” he shared.

There were no reasons cited on why the “Dallas Buyers Club” actor passed on the role, but it is clear that Marvel is actively seeking an A-list actor to fill it.

As for who that villain is, ScreenRant said that it could possibly be Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) father whom Yondu (Michael Rooker) referred to as a “jackass” in the film.

Director James Gunn earlier told Vulture that the second film will be a story about fathers. In a Twitter interview last September, Gunn dished his plans for the characters that will appear in “Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”

He said that it is important to keep Quill as the sole human character in the film for the time being. As for the volume of new characters to be introduced, he said, “Not too many, that’s for sure! I want all of our characters to get MORE personal time than they did in the 1st film.”

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter said that along with McConaughey’s rejection of the villain role is the addition of French actress Pom Klementieff in the cast for an unspecified role.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” is scheduled for release on May 5, 2017.
